Our Possible Impact

The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass through this world.

There will most likely be no ticker-tape parades for us, no monuments created in our honor.

But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will appreciate our compassion, our unique talents.

Someone who will live a happier life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give.

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have a potential to turn a life around.

It’s overwhelming to consider the continuous opportunities there are to make our love felt ..

His Eyes

his eyes

hold

life and death

a curse

and blessing

a sin

and good virtue

in his eyes

i find myself

and lose myself

duality fading

as every illusion

of myself

dissolves

in his eyes

New Release: The Fire in a Woman's Belly III

 one step at a time.

healing is a journey

beginning with one step

it's a hard road

with no shortcuts

and the backpack you'll pack

will be heavy

but as the days move on

and if you're willing to keep moving forward

the backpack gets lighter

less troublesome

and easier to manage

don't be discouraged

there will be tough days

just keep your eyes focused

on the vision you have for yourself

and the world will become yours

My poetry book, The Fire in a Woman's Belly III is now available on Amazon. Follow the link below.

Rest With Your Pain

take your time
to heal, my love
the way back to yourself
isn’t a breathless race
or a runaway train
your rehabilitation
requires respite
not rush
our rustic open wounds
become symmetrically
formed scars once we
allow ourselves time to rest
not when we thrash around
the way to healing isn’t a mountain
face that you must scale
your recovery isn’t a barrier
that you have to climb
your comeback isn’t an
obstacle course
of dangling legs,
grasping fingers
or racing heartbeats
that you are being called
to scramble around,
across or through
you won’t mend
your heart
by “getting over”
what happened to you
your suffering isn’t a
rickety ladder of noisy steps
~ it’s a quiet church of whispering angels
~ it’s a still lake of your beautiful reflection
~ it’s a sacred schoolhouse of learning
if we don’t spend time with
our pain
we never learn from it
if we don’t listen to the shifting
deep rumbles inside of us
we will build our lives on fault lines
if we treat our trauma like a
racecourse to speed through
we will keep crashing into the walls
I don’t believe you
will ever “get over”
anything terrible that
has happened to you
like it is a fence
instead
I believe that if
you rest with your pain
under a tree for an
hour or two
like it is your best friend
it will remind you
over and over about
how you are your most
beautiful when you refuse to give up
don’t let them lie to
you when they tell
you to “move on”
from your wounds
your wounds
make the best
teachers
they have so
much to teach you
about the wealth
of courage you
have inside of you
your pain isn’t
an obstacle
it’s a testimony
of how remarkably
brave you are
when you want to
know peace again
after you fall
to pieces
don’t speed through
your recovery
lie down with your
fat tears on
the couch
for as long as
it takes
to remember
there is absolutely nothing
that can stop you
you don’t need
to overcome anything
like it is a wall
you just need to rest
for a bit
and that’s how you
come back to yourself again
one long nap at a time
my love,
take your time
to heal
I’ll be here waiting
for you to emerge
from under the
blankets like the
Rose of New Life
I’ll be here writing
poetry about how
brave you are to
keep breathing
I’ll be here marveling
at how lovely you are
when you wear your scars
like midnight lingerie

Instead of Talking, Listen

We Indians know about silence.

We aren’t afraid of it.

In fact, to us it is more powerful than words.

Our elders were schooled in the ways of silence, and they passed that along to us. Watch, listen, and then act, they told us.

This is the way to live. Watch the animals to see how they care for their young.

Watch the elders to see how they behave. Watch the white man to see what he wants. Always watch first, with a still heart and mind, then you will learn.

When you have watched enough, then you can act.”

Charles Eastman - Ohiyesa, later in life Charles Eastman--Ohiyesa--states in The Soul of an Indian: “...

silence-the sign of perfect equilibrium.

Silence is the absolute balance of body, mind, and spirit.

The man who preserves his self hood ever calm and unshaken by the storms of existence...

is the ideal attitude and conduct of life. What are the fruits of silence?

They are self-control, true courage or endurance, patience, dignity, and reverence. Silence is the corner-stone of character.”

The Lakota elder continues:

“With the white people it is just the opposite. You learn by talking.

You reward the kids who talk the most in school.

At your parties everyone is talking all at once. In your work you are having meetings where everyone interrupts everyone else.

You say it is working out a problem.

To us it just sounds like a bunch of people saying whatever comes into their heads without listening to others.

Lakota elder continues regarding the sensibilities of traditional First People: “

You don’t convince anyone by arguing.

People make their decisions in their heart.

Talk doesn’t touch my heart.

People should think of their words like seeds. They should plant them, then let them grow in silence.

Our old people taught us that the earth is always speaking to us, but that we have to be silent to hear her.

I can understand all the trees.

The wind.

All the animals.

The insects.

I can tell what a color of the sky means. Everything in the natural world speaks to me.

Teaching our children well

- American Hunger Lakota elder continues:

“I watch TV and every ad I see tells me something is new.

That means I should get it because what I have is old.

There’s no reason to get something just because it”s new.

Your way teaches people to want, want, want. What you have is no good.

What you don’t have is new and better....

White people have an endless hunger.

They want to consume everything and make it part of them.”

Consider consumerism.

Things and Food.

Credit card debt & obesity in this country has become epidemic.

Eastman’s words echo many Native writers throughout decades:

“The native American has been generally despised by his white conquerors for his poverty and simplicity.

They forget, perhaps, that Native religion forbade the accumulation of wealth and the enjoyment of luxury.

Eastman continues: ...

“the love of possessions has appeared as a snare,

and the burdens of a complex society a source of needless peril and temptation.

Thus the Native American kept his spirit free from the clog of pride or envy...”

In Profiles in Wisdom,

Grandfather William Commanda concurs: “Dominant society has forgotten their Creator. It’s the money that rules today, even though God in their book tells them you cannot serve two masters.

Either you serve Creator or you serve the money.

So who are they serving?”

Regarding possessions Eastman continues:

“It was our belief that the love of possessions is a weakness to overcome.

Therefore, the child must learn, early, the beauty of generosity.

He is taught to give away what he prizes most, and that he may taste the happiness of giving. If a child is inclined to be grasping, or to cling to any of his little possessions, legends are told to him, teaching of contempt and disgrace that fall upon the ungenerous person.

Also, public giving,

known as give-aways,

is an important part of ceremony.”

Families give-away much of their treasured possessions in honoring weddings, funerals--yet,

Another example of Partnership model of society.

Time for a Change

darling, do you feel restlessness keeping you awake at night? are you doing everything you should be doing throughout your day and checking it off your list? but still, something inside of you is gently nudging you to wake up. listen to it darling, it’s your soul telling you it’s time for a change. maybe you’ve been avoiding it because your life is comfortable and you don’t want to give that up. look deeper into yourself and probe. ask questions. what is my soul trying to tell me? is there something in my life i’m avoiding or should be doing? i promise you if you earnestly search, you will know what to do next. start listening. start writing it down. pay attention to how you feel. start small. be silent once a day for five minutes. find out what it is your soul is trying to make you aware of, so you can live the life god dreamed for you.

You Are Simply Finding Your Way

You are not lost

You are simply finding your way

You are not broken

You are simply healing and mending your heart

You are not weak

You are simply growing stronger

You are not ugly

You are simply discovering your beauty

You are not helpless

You are simply stepping into your power

You are not defeated

You are simply reclaiming your strength

And you are not nobody

You are simply learning who you are.

The Door is Always Open

To anyone who claims they love me..

Don’t have me in your life if you're just putting up with me.

I don't want to feel used or like an inconvenience to anyone.

I have a loyal spirit and a big heart, but my fault is giving to much of myself to people who don't accept me as I am.

You may want to change me or just wish that I was a little more like you and less like myself.

If that's the case, please exit my life.

I don't mind at my age being alone.

I gravitate towards people that expand my soul and cause me to think deeply about life.

If I'm not your cup of tea, so be it.

I'm the rare kind and that's why once you do decide to leave you'll be looking for a way back.

And I'll hope that you took a piece of me with you..

The piece that longs for more depth and meaning in life.

And I hope when you come across a gypsy spirit like myself, you'll sit down and learn her life story.

Perhaps over a cup of tea that leaves your cup filled for another season of your life.

And welcome you I will.

I don't turn anyone away who wants to know their own soul.

My door is always open to those who ache for more.
